Beyond Behaviour: Introducing Our 90-Day Three-Phase Recovery Program at Joshua House

Sep 24, 2026

When a family member or loved one enters residential recovery, the questions carry weight and the stakes are high. Families want to know: Will they just be managed, or will they truly heal? What does the journey look like, and will they feel safe and welcomed?

At Joshua House, we have spent a great deal of time listening, reimagining, and building a program designed to answer those questions with hope, clinical depth, and pastoral grace. Today, we are proud to formally share an overview of our updated three-phase recovery and personal development model.

The Sanctuary and the Root: Moving Beyond Mere Management

The helping world has poured immense energy into upgrading external circumstances—providing safer environments, clinical care, and structured routines. These are good, merciful, and entirely necessary.

However, as we often see on the frontlines of recovery, giving a person better living conditions does not automatically heal the broken condition they live in. Clean beds and behavioral tools can sustain a person for a season, but without being grafted back into the root, lasting transformation remains a strained existence. We don’t want to mistake the doorway for the destination, but we do recognise that we need still to walk through the door to get to the destination.

  • Biological & Psychological: Operating fully in alignment with Assisted Living Registry (ALR) standards, we provide a trauma-informed, regulated environment utilizing practical tools—such as CBT and DBT-informed behavioural insights, somatic grounding, and emotional regulation strategies—to help calm dysregulated nervous systems.

  • Social: We foster a supportive, accountable brotherhood that replaces isolation with real community.

  • Spiritual Container: While we are a Christ-centered recovery ministry, faith is never a prerequisite for entry. We do not coerce, manipulate, or condition our care on religious performance. Instead, we offer our faith in Christ as an act of radical hospitality.

The Journey: A Three-Phase Path to Restoration

True recovery happens in intentional stages rather than through a rushed, rigid timeline. To ensure men step safely from intensive healing back into full community life, Joshua House operates as a comprehensive three-phase program:

Phase 1: The Creek (Chilliwack Lake)

The journey begins in a quiet, secluded setting near Chilliwack Lake where residents run our 90-day program. Here, residents step away from the chaos of addiction to stabilize and work through our 12-week rolling curriculum. Scheduling cycles through core modules on complex trauma, shame, anger, and grief, as well as doing an inductive study rooted in the Psalms, and walking through session material that focuses on Character development. We aim to establish a predictable daily rhythm of reflection, structured support, and work therapy.

Phase 2: In-Care Housing (Abbotsford)

As men progress, they transition to our structured supportive housing in Abbotsford. This phase maintains supportive structure and accountability while introducing new opportunities for community reintegration, practical life application, and gradual stepping back into everyday responsibilities.

Phase 3: Aftercare & Working Houses

The final phase focuses on long-term sustainability and independence. Men step into our working houses, where they maintain active recovery routines, secure employment or vocational training, and practice living out their new foundation in the rhythm of normal, daily life.

What Residents and Families Can Expect

From day one, residents step into a predictable, supportive environment structured to foster accountability and renewal. Rather than white-knuckling through recovery, residents are equipped with practical relapse prevention tools to ride out emotional surges. They are met by a team that refuses to treat them as mere “metrics to be reported” or “cases to be solved,” but honors them as individuals with intrinsic value that cannot be revoked by relapse.

Walking Together

Whether you are a parent wondering if your son will find a safe refuge, a donor investing in transformed lives, a church partner, or a peer organization—regardless of where you stand personally on matters of faith—thank you.

At Joshua House, we don’t aim only to manage symptoms; we aim to build a safe sanctuary where the weary can catch their breath, where old survival loops end, and where lives can take deep root in Christ—the One who brings true, lasting restoration.
